{"id":1427,"date":"2012-06-10T00:46:40","date_gmt":"2012-06-09T23:46:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/userblogs.fu-berlin.de\/afibinirland2012\/?p=1427"},"modified":"2012-06-10T19:03:22","modified_gmt":"2012-06-10T18:03:22","slug":"domain-controller-upgrade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/userblogs.fu-berlin.de\/afibinirland2012\/2012\/06\/10\/domain-controller-upgrade\/","title":{"rendered":"Domain Controller Upgrade"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We finally started upgrading the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Domain_controller\" target=\"_blank\">domain controllers (DCs)<\/a> here at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.translink.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Translink<\/a>, which are currently running <a href=\"https:\/\/technet.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windowsserver\/bb512919.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Windows Server 2003<\/a>, to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/server-cloud\/windows-server\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Windows Server 2008 R2<\/a>. Yay! As I told you in a <a href=\"https:\/\/userblogs.fu-berlin.de\/afibinirland2012\/2012\/05\/25\/active-directory-upgrade\/\" target=\"_blank\">previous post<\/a>, this is necessary for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/exchange\/en-us\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Exchange 2010<\/a> migration to start.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday after lunch Rory, a server technician working for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northgatemanagedservices.com\" target=\"_blank\">Northgate<\/a>, came to our office to support us with the migration.<\/p>\n<p>First we set up a temporary (virtual) DC, moved the services and copied the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Flexible_single_master_operation\" target=\"_blank\">FSMO<\/a> roles to it.<\/p>\n<p>Now we could start upgrading the DCs. As Windows Server 2008 R2 doesn&#8217;t allow an in-place upgrade from Windows Server 2003, we had to do a complete new installation. So we demoted the first DC to a normal member server and then removed it from the domain. Now we could install the new operating system, get a cup of tea, do some basic configurations, join the freshly installed server to the domain and run dcpromo to make it a DC again.
