Overview: The talk will provide an overview about the ERC project “Governing with Data: Local Experimentation in Authoritarian China”, led by Prof. Genia Kostka. The project examines how digital technologies are integrated into local governing processes in Chinese cities and what the impact of big data is on social, political and economic life in China. The ERC research team will introduce the overall project aims and summarize ongoing subprojects. Two sub-projects will be introduced in detail – the establishment of a DigiDatabase, tracking prefectural digital activities, and a study on the emergence of local big data bureaucracies in China. The funding is 1.5 million Euros and the total project period five years (October 2020- September 2025).
