\u201cNoisy Chatbots, Silent Archives, and the Illusion of Interoperability\u201d
Archival collections are increasingly being digitized; however the ease of access belies the multiple processes that result in inherently partial and selective collections online. Furthermore,\u00a0infrastructures holding in place digitized materials are built based on Western worldviews and imperial legacies that mediate and condition our understanding of materials. Striving for\u00a0interoperability without being aware of or interrogating omissions, power structures, and distortions underlying datasets we work with results in projects that perpetuate dominant voices and\u00a0in scholarship that reinscribes and reifies archival silences into the digital realm. Simply put, we end up training our systems with vast swaths of world memory absent and make what is\u00a0already visible hyper-visible. In my talk, I will discuss focusing not only on what is there, but mainly how to seek out \u2018silences\u2019 in a generative way for providing a more equitable view of the\u00a0past\u2014and of the present.
Amalia S. Levi\u00a0is an archivist, historian, and cultural heritage professional working with the non-profit HeritEdge Connection. She is currently conducting doctoral research at Bonn\u00a0University\u2019s Center for Dependency and Slavery Studies on the community of enslaved in Jewish households in Barbados, looking into issues of archives and knowledge production. She\u00a0has worked in numerous projects doing exhibits, as well as processing and digitizing archival collections. She has Master\u2019s degrees in History; Library Science and Archives; and Museum\u00a0Studies. Her research focuses on \u2018unearthing\u2019 marginalized people, who are usually invisible in archives, by weaving together different types of information to go beyond archival\u00a0documents.
