{"id":1410,"date":"2018-09-12T15:16:25","date_gmt":"2018-09-12T13:16:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/userblogs.fu-berlin.de\/langsci-press\/?p=1410"},"modified":"2018-09-13T08:08:59","modified_gmt":"2018-09-13T06:08:59","slug":"library-science-student-evaluates-our-community-proofreading-setup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/userblogs.fu-berlin.de\/langsci-press\/2018\/09\/12\/library-science-student-evaluates-our-community-proofreading-setup\/","title":{"rendered":"Our Community Proofreading setup evaluated by Library Science"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibi.hu-berlin.de\/en\/startpage\">Berlin School of Library and Information Science<\/a> has had a theoretical look at the way proofreading is organised at Language Science Press, resulting in a BA thesis by Lole Westedt entitled<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Community Proofreading am Beispiel Language Science Press: \u201eGratis-Korrekturlesen\u201c oder auch inhaltlich anreichernd?<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n[<em>Community proofreading as used by Language Science Press:\u00a0 Only cost-free copy-editing, or also additional improvement of content?<\/em>]<\/p>\n<p>This study evaluates in how far the way we integrate the community in the proofreading of our books via PaperHive can be seen as a type of (content) open review, and what types of community comments we find (typos, wording, specialist suggestions). This is a nice and diverse set of countries. They made a total of 381 annotations in those 10 chapters, averaging 1.67 annotations per page. Westedt sorted the comments into the following categories;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1411\" style=\"width: 594px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/userblogs.fu-berlin.de\/langsci-press\/files\/2018\/09\/westedtbars.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1411\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1411\" src=\"https:\/\/userblogs.fu-berlin.de\/langsci-press\/files\/2018\/09\/westedtbars-1024x624.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"356\" srcset=\"https:\/\/userblogs.fu-berlin.de\/langsci-press\/files\/2018\/09\/westedtbars-1024x624.png 1024w, https:\/\/userblogs.fu-berlin.de\/langsci-press\/files\/2018\/09\/westedtbars-300x183.png 300w, https:\/\/userblogs.fu-berlin.de\/langsci-press\/files\/2018\/09\/westedtbars-768x468.png 768w, https:\/\/userblogs.fu-berlin.de\/langsci-press\/files\/2018\/09\/westedtbars-492x300.png 492w, https:\/\/userblogs.fu-berlin.de\/langsci-press\/files\/2018\/09\/westedtbars.png 1311w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1411\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Types of comments by the community proofreaders<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Most of this is not surprising, but the relevant part are the 25 comments relating to content (6.56%), which, according to Westedt, would not have been expected in a normal copy-editing process. These comprise suggestions for alternative translations of Chinese; an additional reference to literature which was missing;\u00a0 or the request to provide another example altogether since the example chosen simply did not prove the point.<\/p>\n<p>Her conclusion is, then: 1) Our community proofreading\u00a0 is actually a type of open review and 2) it contains significant parts of content quality assurance and goes beyond normal copy-editing. This is in line with the <a href=\"https:\/\/userblogs.fu-berlin.de\/langsci-press\/2016\/04\/05\/experiences-with-open-review-and-community-proofreading\/\">observations Stefan M\u00fcller made some time ago<\/a>. She also finds that the heterogeneous pool of proofreaders from diverse backgrounds and countries leads to a diversity of comments which reflects the future readership (and the problems future readers might encounter) better than what could be expected from a single proofreader.<\/p>\n<p>You can <a href=\"https:\/\/paperhive.org\/documents\/items\/Tjjj5pQKj2ci\">read the thesis on PaperHive<\/a>, and, with form and content in tune, you can openly comment on the results there as well.
