To unpack the geopolitical, environmental, and cultural dimensions of \u2018remoteness\u2019 \u2013 particularly in Nordic, Baltic, circumpolar, and other such &#8220;far&#8221; (<em>from whom?<\/em>) northerly regions \u2013 we center Indigenous scholarship and critiques of extractive colonialism, as well as artistic and embodied research approaches, in a series of six symposia across the Baltic rim between 2026-2028.<br><br>The project turns its attention to regional peripheries or cartographic borderlands between nation states; the residential areas of Indigenous and minoritized communities; historical testimonies and lacunae; sub-cultural meeting spots, or your neighbour\u2019s kitchen.\u2026 Theorizing modernity by turning to its so-called outskirts, the project inquires sensoria of absence, distance, and neglect that have blossomed along the frontiers of colonial empires and sedimented among the margins of modern infrastructures of \u201cglobal connectivity\u201d. With lingering attention, <em>Studies in Remoteness<\/em> intends to unsettle conditions of obscuring or exoticising \u2013 resolutely acknowledging histories, topographies and epistemologies with an eye to how these might come into \u201cintense proximity\u201d, as coined by Okwui Enwezor.<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Studies in Remoteness<\/em><\/strong> is coordinated within the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsuweb.org\/\"><strong>Nordic Summer University<\/strong><\/a> by the scholar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geisteswissenschaften.fu-berlin.de\/en\/we07\/theater-tanz\/mitarbeiter-innen\/wimi\/drury\/index.html\">Lindsey Drury<\/a> and artistic researcher <a href=\"https:\/\/helenahildur.se\/\">Helena Hildur W.<\/a>, in cooperation with project members <a href=\"https:\/\/research.abo.fi\/en\/persons\/tinka-harvard\">Tinka Harvard<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/research.abo.fi\/en\/persons\/shiluinla-jamir\">Shiluinla Jamir<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/utu.academia.edu\/EssiNuutinen\">Essi Nuutinen<\/a>, in cooperation with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.su.se\/english\/profiles\/kaen3606-1.473442\">Karolina Enquist K\u00e4llgren<\/a> (Stockholm University\/Nordic Summer University), St\u00e9phanie Barill\u00e9 (Nordic Summer University), among others.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Studies in Remoteness<\/em> at Nordic Summer University:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-nordic-summer-university wp-block-embed-nordic-summer-university\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"GkaQ8boOmj\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsuweb.org\/circle-1-studies-in-remoteness-sensoria-of-absence-distance-and-neglect\/\">Circle 1: Studies in Remoteness.
