Prof. Dr. Cornelia Reiher

Cornelia Reiher is professor of Japanese Studies at Freie Universität Berlin. Her main research interests include rural Japan, food studies, globalization and science and technology studies. Her recent publications include a special issue titled Fieldwork in Japan: New trends and challenges (2018) and book chapters on urbanites relocating to rural Japan (2020), Japanese food entrepreneurs in Berlin (2022) and transnational protest movement(s) against preferential trade agreements in Asia (2022) and the co-edited methods handbook (with Nora Kottmann) Studying Japan: Handbook of research designs, fieldwork and methods (2020).

本研究プロジェクト主任研究者のライヤー・コネリアはベルリン自由大学で日本学部の教授であり、 東アジア研究科(GEAS)のプログラム副長を勤めています。主な研究テーマは、日本の地域、食研究、グローバリゼーション、科学技術です。近著として「Fieldwork in Japan: New Trends and Challenges」(2018年、雑誌出典特別号)、地域への移住者を論ずる記事(2020年)、福島原発事故後の食品中の放射性核種のガバナンス(2020年)、アジアにおける特恵貿易協定に対するトランスナショナルな抗議運動 (2019年を発表しました。またノラ・コットマンとの共編著として日本研究手法のハンドブック「Studying Japan: Handbook of research designs, fieldwork and methods」 (2020年12月)を刊行しました。

Research Assistant

M.A. Cecilia Luzi

Cecilia Luzi obtained a B.A. in Ethnology and Social Anthropology at the University of Siena, Italy. Later, she moved to Paris to the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) where she completed her M.A. in Social Anthropology.
She also holds a B.A. in Japanese Studies from the Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales (INALCO), Paris. During her M.A. there, she received a scholarship for one year exchange program with Kyōritsu Joshi University in Tōkyō.
While in Japan, she had the chance to live among communities of rural in-migrants in the prefecture of Wakayama, and thus decided to focus her study on the phenomenon of urban-rural migrations in contemporary Japan. Her PhD research is conducted inside the project Urban-rural migration and rural revitalization in Japan.

ルーシー・セシリアはイタリアのシエナ大学で民族学と社会人類学の学士号を取得した後、パリの社会科学高等研究院 (EHESS)で社会学人類の修士を卒業しました。また、パリ国立東洋言語文化大学院 (INALCO)で日本の学士号も取得しました。修士課程在学には、奨学金を得て東京の共立女子大学で一年間留学しました。日本留学中に、和歌山県の農村への移住したコミュニティと生活する機会を得て、現在地域への移住定住という現象をテーマとしてさらに研究することにしました。現在ベルリン自由大学(博士課程)に在籍し、本プロジェクト「移住定住と地域おこし」の一員として調査を進めています。

Associate team member

M.A. Sarah Clay (Bijlsma)

Sarah Clay is since 2019 a doctoral candidate in Japanese Studies at the Graduate School of East Asian Studies (GEAS), Freie Universität Berlin. She obtained a BA and MA degree in Japanese Studies from Ghent University, Belgium, with a special focus on Global Studies. During her training in the Japanese language and culture, Sarah spent time as an exchange student at Ryukoku University in Kyoto and Kyushu University in Fukuoka. Her current research discusses Japanese migrants on Miyako-jima, a remote island part of Okinawa prefecture. Positioned at the intersection of environmental anthropology and migration studies, the project focusses on human-nature relationships and questions how the relatively young urbanites understand themselves in relation to their new socio-ecological environments. Furthermore, Sarah previously obtained a BA in Fine Arts from ArtEZ Academy of Arts and Design, Arnhem, the Netherlands. She is the co-founder and editor of TERA: journal of Technology, Ecology, and Risk Assemblages that explores how speculations about the future affect societies in the present day.

ベルスマ・サラは2019年よりベルリン自由大学の東アジア研究所 (GEAS)で日本研究の博士課程に在籍しています。ベルギーのゲント大学でグローバル・スタディーズを専攻し、日本学の学士ならびに修士号を取得しました。日本語と日本文化の研究中、龍谷大学と福岡の九州大学に交換留学生として滞在しました。現在の研究テーマは沖縄の離島である宮古島への移住者についてです。プロジェクトは環境人類学と移民研究の交差点に位置し、人間と自然の関係を中心にし、都市からの若者が新しい社会生態の環境との関係で自分自身をどのように位置づけ、(自己)理解を深めるのか、問いかけています。さらに、オランダのアーネムにある造形芸術アカデミー(ArtEZ)で美術の学士号を取得しました。研究雑誌TERA: Journal of Technology, Ecology, and Risk Assemblages の共同設立者と編集者です。Tera誌は未来への推測が現代の社会にどのような影響を与えるかが探求されています。

Student assistant

Ewelina Skwara

Ewelina Skwara is a student in the MA program in Japanese Studies at Freie Universität Berlin. She has not been to Japan yet but wishes to apply for the JET Program after graduation. In her studies she shows keen interest in Japanese literature and the implementation of artificial intelligence in Japan. Since October 2023 she has been supporting Prof. Dr. Cornelia Reiher as a student assistant, editing and updating the blog and its Instagram account as well as completing other tasks concerning the project.

エウェリナ・スクアラはベルリン自由大学の日本研究修士課程に在籍しています。日本はまだ行ったことがないが、卒業後、JETプログラムに応募したがっています。日本文学と日本におけるAIの導入に強い関心を持っています。10月2023年からライヤー・コネリア教授の学生アシスタントとして、ブログの編集と更新、インスタグラム、またその他多様なプロジェクトに関するタスクをしています。

Research Assistant (2020-2023)

M.A. Tu Thanh Ngo (Frank Tu)

Tu Thanh Ngo joined the Freie University Berlin in October 2020, as part of the project “Urban-rural migration and rural revitalization in Japan” led by Professor Cornelia Reiher. He works as a research assistant (PhD candidate) in the sub-project “The periphery and the center: Support schemes for urban-rural migration and their local appropriation”, which focuses on the Japanese government’s policies and support schemes for rural revitalization.
Tu Thanh Ngo has a keen interest in politics, public policy and policy analysis. He holds an M.A. in Political Science (Public Policy) from the Central European University, and a B.A. in Liberal Arts with an emphasis on Japanese politics and Global studies from Doshisha University.

ツ・フランク・は本研究プロジェクト「移住定住と地域おこし」の一員として、2020年10月にベルリン自由大学(博士課程)に進学しました。サブプロジェクト「周辺と中心・移住定住の支援政策とその地域別の活用」の研究助手(博士課程生)として、日本政府の地方創生の政策分析を担当します。彼は政治、公共政策、政策分析に深い関心を持っています。中央ヨーロッパ大学(Central European University)で政治学(公共政策)修士号を、同志社大学で日本政治とグローバル教育を中心とした国際教育学部の学士号を取得しています。

Student assistant (2022-2023)

Furkan Kemik

Furkan Kemik is a student in the MA program in Japanese Studies at Freie Universität Berlin. After his exchange in Japan in 2018 at Waseda University, he completed an internship at the Japanese International School of Berlin, where he worked closely with Japanese migrants. Since 2020, he has been working as a student assistant for Prof. Dr. Cornelia Reiher, supporting the project by doing various research, updating the blog, or assisting the team in different ways.

ケミク・フルカンはベルリン自由大学の日本研究修士課程に在籍しています。2018年度に早稲田大学へ交換留学後、ベルリン日本人国際学校でインターン生として実習活動をし、日本人移住者らと深く関わり合いながら仕事をしました。2020年からライヤー・コネリア教授の学生アシスタントとして、研究やブログの更新、またその他様々の活動を通してプロジェクトを支援し、貢献しています。

Student assistant (2020-2022)

Maritchu Durand

Maritchu Durand is a student in the Japanese Studies MA program at the Freie Universität Berlin. During her exchange in Japan in the year 2018, she experienced the life of newcomers in rural Hokkaidō and has since then taken an interest in urban-rural migration. She is working as a student assistant on the project, conducting various research, updating the blog or supporting the team in various ways.

マリチュ・ドゥランはベルリン自由大学の日本研究修士課程に在籍しています。2018年に早稲田大学に交換留学し、その際北海道の農村への移住者の生活を体験して、都市から地域へ移住定住の現象に関心を持っています。プロジェクト「移住定住と地域おこし」の学生スタッフとして、調査やブログの更新など、様々な形でチームをサポートしています。
