Before moving to Denmark, she was assistant professor in China Studies and vice director of the Graduate School of East Asian Studies at Freie Universit\u00e4t Berlin. Elena started her research on rural China as a postdoctoral fellow in the German research network \u201eGovernance in China\u201c, when she conducted <a href=\"http:\/\/journals.sub.uni-hamburg.de\/giga\/jcca\/article\/view\/948\">research on local cadres\u2019 urbanization strategies in rural areas<\/a>. Elena has a doctoral degree in Chinese Studies from the University of Tuebingen, and an MA in Chinese Studies and Political Science from the University of Hamburg. He works as lecturer at the Institute of Chinese Studies at\u00a0University of Freiburg. In the\u00a0summer term 2018 Ren\u00e9 is the substitute professor for the Chair of Chinese Studies at the same institution. Her research focus is the redevelopment of villages-in-the-city <em>(chengzhongcun)<\/em>\u00a0in China&#8217;s megacities<em>.<\/em> Before joining the project, Xiang completed her Master of Arts degree in Chinese Studies at University of W\u00fcrzburg, Germany. She grew up in Guangzhou, China and she has studied in Hong Kong, United States, and Japan.
