germany got me back

We flight back on saturday at 7 o’clock and arrived ~11 o’clock in germany. My mom fetched me on the airport and drove me to my apartment. I liked the time in ireland but im happy to be back to my everyday life. I will miss many people there but I still stay in touch with some of the employees there. It was a experience that was definitely worth it. That will be my last entry so I’m saying goodbye.
Greetings Toni Knispel

dinner with celtrino

Yesterday our office went to show cooking in the city center. After we finished work at 17:30 we all went to a place that does wedding party’s and show cooking. It’s like a open hall with a big open kitchen in one of the corners and huge round tables. So first watched him preparing and cooking the four-course meal and then we ate it. Obliviously the second part was the better one. The quality of the food was astonishing. I took photos of the dishes but forgot to do one on the first dish. It was mushrooms on toast and a mushroom soup.

my work space

It’s a bit late for me uploading some pictures of my work space but I didn’t through about that before. The office is in the highest floor of a building on the Parnell street. The entrance is on a parking lot that is used for us and the other company’s around here. The building and the overall look in that area is not that nice. It looks really old and unkempt but the office itself is really nice and looks neat. I don’t have a picture from the hole office because its completely open and I don’t want to annoy anyone.

Last week in Ireland

That’s the last week here. I look forward to get back home in my normal life but really enjoyed the time here. The last few weeks rushed and I didn’t even realized that the time is almost over. I’m looking forward to tomorrow because one of our human resource managers has planned a big dinner for the hole office. We will go in a restaurant that was rent for us the evening and enjoy delicious Asian cuisine. Hope everybody had a great time.

Working in the Linux Shell

Because there is not that much to do here I work on my Linux Vserver most of the time. I connect to it over ssh and use only the shell for it. Mostly I play a bit and install software and server solutions for fun and experience. At the moment I try to get my Linux VPS as secure as possible. I started to install fail2ban a linux software that creates logs and bans IPs that fail to connect via ssh to often. Its fairly powerful and in combination with sendmail its even capable to send me mails with information’s about logins and failed connection attempts. Now I try to get a program that captures network traffic to write a log file and send it me per mail in a time interval. To see if suspicious IPs connect to the server or anything eats my bandwidth. Maybe I write a entry when I have that done and with which tools.

Not much to say about my weekend

My weekend was kinda horrible. I went to Belfast on Friday again and we watched the football game Spain vs Netherlands. After that I got really ill and could not leave the couch for the hole weekend. I’m still not in my best shape now but it got better. So again I don’t have that much to write about but hope the last two weeks are nice and a good finish to my great experience here.

spontaneous data center visit

Last week Amit and I had to spontaneously visit the data center because one of our racks wasn’t accessible anymore and some services went down. We feared that the switch we completely filled with LAN connections last week went down due to overload. But as we went there we saw that the switch was ok and fully functional. We searched in the switch log for the problem and found out that the uplink port disconnects sometimes. The problem is we don’t know where the uplink is actually going. Then we got help from a employee of the data center and found out that the uplink goes in the switch from our other rack and after making a new cable connection to the other rack everything worked fine. The employee renewed the plugs because the cable goes 10 meters over many racks so we can’t just get a new one and we went back. But we still don’t trust the cable with malfunctions and we let it unused from now.

Data center visit (this time with pictures)

Yesterday we visited the data center again to deploy one Dell server for our Hyper-V cluster. We got there with taxi again. At the way back it was even the same driver as last time. And the security guard was happier this day. It was all in all the same task like last time we went there with the exception that the switch in the rack we got still space for server is full now. So next time we need a new switch too. And like I said i took pictures. Note that unfortunately we can’t get better cable management because the systems run 24/7 productive and we can’t unplug anything not even for minutes. So we have to stick with the cables that some older System Engineers plugged.
