Achievements 2018

We started our annual retrospectives in 2015 (2016, 2017). This is the fourth installment, for 2018.

Books and series

In 2018, we published 33 books:

101 works were proposed to Language Science Press in 2018, for a total of 425. In 2017, 99 works had been proposed.

The following figure gives a breakdown of the distribution of these works and their states of completion.

The most active series are Studies in Diversity Linguistics (92), Textbooks in Language Sciences (50), EOTMS (34), and Translation and Multilingual Natural Language Processing (25).

Series

There are currently 22 series (+2). Last year, we accepted History and Philosophy of the Language Sciences and Language of the Caucasus.

The median time from submission to decision remains 96 days. The median time from submission to publication was 252 days (+8).

The acceptance rate (counting desk rejections) is 54.73% (-2.03) over all series. Only considering submissions where the proposal had been previously approved, the acceptance rate is 87.30% (+1.13).

Downloads

In 2018, LangSci pdfs were downloaded 140,433 times (+66,566 compared to 2017) for a total of 315,259. This excludes downloads by search engine robots.
The most popular work is Einführung in die grammatische Beschreibung des Deutschen (all three editions) with 28,426 downloads, followed by The future of dialects, downloaded 27,658 times, and Grammatical Theory with 19,216 downloads.

The countries where most readers come from are Germany, the US, China, France and the UK.

Community involvement

Language Science Press is a community enterprise. We rely on the community for authoring and reviewing, but also for typesetting and proofreading. Across all published books, 181 linguists from all over the world have participated in proofreading. The most prolific proofreader is again Andreas Hölzl, who has proofread chapters of 31 books.
There are currently 353 proofreaders registered with Language Science Press.

Geographical distribution

For our 22 series, we are happy to be able to rely on 289 (+26) members in editorial boards from 45 (+1) different countries on 6 continents.

Paperhive

We have run all our 33 books from this year through PaperHive for proofreading, and our full back catalog is available on PaperHive as well. The most comments (1393) are found for African linguistics on the prairie.
