Am eigenen Leib haben wir erfahren, welche Strapazen die Reise über die ehemaligen Grenzen von DDR, Tschechoslowakei, Ungarn und schließlich Österreich mit sich bringen kann. Hunger, Durst, Müdigkeit, Gliederschmerzen. Nicht zu schweigen von Umwegen, Abwegen, Unfällen. Wir sprechen von über 1000 Kilometern, die die Flüchtlinge aus der DDR damals zurücklegen mussten, wobei sie mit Sicherheit nicht den direkten Weg nahmen. Als Ziel hatten sie auch keine unbeschwerte Kursfahrt, sondern eine lebensverändernde Reise in die Freiheit. Sie saßen in der Regel nicht in einem klimatisierten Zug oder Bus und hatten andere Probleme, als sich über die Qualität des Frühstücks oder fehlende Elektroartikel zu beschweren. Im Trabi oder Wartburg –ohne Klimaanlage- mit der ganzen Familie und allem was übrig blieb von ihrem Leben in der DDR. Der Blick zurück fällt ins Leere, Zelte abgebrochen. Eine Odyssee. Nicht wissend, ob die Gerüchte über grüne Grenzen und einsichtige Grenzer der Wahrheit entsprachen; nicht wissend, ob die Ungarn Freund oder Feind war, die Stasi um die nächste Ecke lauerte; nicht wissend, ob sie DEN Tag unbeschadet und im Westen verbringen würden. Es stand alles auf dem Spiel und einige Hundert haben es geschafft. Jedoch nicht bevor sie teils wochenlang auf Zeltplätzen ausharren und sensationslustigen Reportern das Blaue vom Himmel lügen mussten, die Kinder bei Laune halten und warten. Es steht in den Sternen, wie viele Bürger aus der damaligen DDR den Urlaub am Balaton doch einfach Urlaub haben sein lassen. Der Nerven wegen.
