Der Balaton zählte neben der Adria und der Schwarzmeerküste zu den beliebtesten Urlaubszielen im sozialistischen Osteuropa. Doch während an diesen Orten in den letzten Jahren viel investiert wurde, um sich an die veränderten Wünsche der Urlauber anzupassen, erwartet den Besuchern am Balaton vielerorts noch der alte sozialistische Charme
In Siofok ist die Welt noch in Ordnung. Langos, launige Kinder und lange Felsenstrände prägen hier das Stadtbild. Schon nach kurzer Zeit merkt man: hier geht es gemächlich zu. Keine Partymeilen, keine aufdringlichen Strandverkäufer, keine saufenden Jugendlichen stören hier den Badespaß. Die Besucher sind Familien und einige ältere Semester, überwiegend Ungarn und einige ostdeutsche Nostalgie-Urlauber. Die massenkulturellen Segnungen der letzten 20 Jahre haben einen großen Bogen um den ungarischen Binnensee gemacht.
Angenehm, könnte man meinen, wären da nicht die offensichtlichen Mängel: veraltete sanitäre Anlagen, vor sich hin rostende Hotels und fehlenden Freizeitmöglichkeiten. Die Erwartungen an die Sommerfrische haben sich in den letzten zwei Dekaden stark gewandelt. Heute erwartet der Besuchern ein All-Inclusive-Paket, Animation und Abenteuer. All das kann der Balaton nicht bieten. So bleiben die Besucher nach und nach aus. Die zahlungskräftigen Urlaubergruppen wie junge Erwachsene aus Westeuropa oder die reiselustige russische Mittelklasse sucht man hier vergeblich. Nicht, dass sie jemals da gewesen wären. Aber früher konnte man ihr Fehlen verschmerzen.
Ein kurzer Rückblick: die Hochzeit des Balaton waren die 70er und 80er Jahre. Touristen aus der DDR brachen damals in Massen auf, um in Ungarn ein kleines Stückchen Freiheit jenseits des tristen sozialistischen Alltags zu erleben. Hier wurden Ost-West-Kontakte geknüpft, hier lernte man die Mitbürger aus dem Westen kennen und hier fühlte man die Freiheit, die man im Osten so vermisste. Eine kleine Oase des Glücks für viele. All das ist heute Geschichte und nur mehr Gegenstand von forschenden Historikern. Das Überleben und die wirtschaftliche Entwicklung lässt sich damit nicht garantieren.
Wie es anders geht, sieht man unter anderem an der bulgarischen Schwarzmeerküste, auch so ein sozialistischer Sehnsuchtsort des Spätkommunismus. Doch im Gegensatz zum mitteleuropäischen Bruderstaat hat man zwischen Varna und Burgas in den letzten Jahren viel Geld in die Hand genommen, um neue Besucherschichten anzulocken. Mit Erfolg. Bulgarien erwirtschaftet heute mehr als 10% seines BIP durch den Tourismus.
Von solchen Zahlen kann man in Ungarn nur träumen. Es gibt viele Gründe, warum man hier den touristischen Zug der letzten Jahre verpasst hat: geographische Nachteile, fehlende Investitionen und ein Ausruhen auf den goldenen Zeiten, als die Ferienwelt am Balaton noch im Ordnung war. Lange ist das her. Und doch fühlt sich der Besucher an diese sozialistischen Zeiten erinnert, wenn er an der Strandpromenade in Siofok spazieren geht. Ein klein wenig ist hier die Zeit stehen geblieben. Ein Ort der verpassten Chancen. Und so wird Siofok zum Symbol für ein ganzes Land, das es verpasst hat, in den letzten 25 Jahren seine Möglichkeiten auszuschöpfen.
