Having a good time at „The Empire“

Hey folks,

last Sunday we met our English teacher, Mr.Schlenger in his hotel. He wanted to talk to us to figure out, if we feel comfortable in our apartments and in our placements. He mentioned that there is a live music act at „The Empire„, so we decided to go there and listen to the music after finishing the conversation about the apartments and placements.

The band was supposed to begin at 9 o’clock but started at about 10 o’clock..we did not really expect them to begin on time..but waiting was worth while! They played songs like „Purple Rain“, „Talkin‘ about a Revolution“ and many more..The way, the singer interpreted these songs was just amazing! For me, this evening was just a Bingo!

I hope that there are many more of these evenings, because that’s what music’s for..

The first Friday

Hey folks!

This is my first Friday in Ireland. In some companies, there is a so called „Casual Friday“ which means everybody can wear T-Shirt and jeans. Yesterday I was told that at Steria there is this „casual Friday“ so I’m sitting here in T-Shirt and jeans, although wearing a shirt and a smart trouser didn’t feel uncomfortable.

At Steria, all the staff has lunch together outside the office every Friday, talking about private things, just having a good time. So I’m looking forward to this event and I hope that I get in contact with Matt today, who wants to introduce me into the field of SAN configuration and management and into Windows clustering.

Tomorrow, our English teacher Mr.Schlenger is expected to visit us, but we don’t know when this will happen, so at this moment, there is no plan of action for this weekend. I hope to get some information about his arrival this evening.

Ireland is still fascinating me.. I really have to take some more pictures..

Best,

Rene

My first days at work

Hey!

Yesterday was my first day at Steria. At 9’clock Maria introduced me to the other guys working at Steria and after that, I started to organize my sparsely equipped desk. I got some information concerning the projects which are maintained at this moment. Hardware replacement seems to be one of my tasks here at Steria. Today I met with Stephen (from Steria) and made a trip to a hospital in Londonderry. There was a problem with a monitor, which had to be calibrated. Back in Belfast we had lunch and continued working…

Next updates will be available a.s.a.p.

My first impressions about Belfast

Hey folks!

This is our second evening here in Belfast. The flight was quite calm and without any problems. When we arrived at Dublin Airport, we had to wait about thirty minutes for the bus to Belfast and arrived at 11:30 p.m.. Maria, who is one of our contact persons, ordered some taxis, which took us to our apartments. I share my apartment with Oliver, Tim and Tobias. We have two single rooms and one double room. Our apartment is very comfortable, offering a washing machine, water boiler, automatic dishwasher and a cooker. The apartment is very clean and we all are very satisfied.

Today, we had a meeting with Kevin, who told us some facts and responsibilities concerning our stay in Northern Ireland. Kevin is a really nice guy, who seems to be really interested in ensuring that we all have a really good time in Belfast.

We already walked a lot, so we’ve already seen many streets and shops of Belfast, which is a city with a very special charm. People are very friendly and try to help each other. When we were looking for the correct bus, a man asked us, where we want to go and helped us to find the way. Another man standing next to us noticed our conversation and asked us, where we are from, afterwards he told us to have a good time in Ireland.

So my first impression about Belfast is a really good one. People are friendly, the accomodation is really satisfying and tomorrow, I will have my first day at Steria, the company I will work at during the next eight weeks.

So, I think tomorrow or on Wednesday I will tell you something about my first day at work.

Till later then

René
