Over hours

Dear reader,

today is Friday in the third week of our trip and the time is still running as hell. Yesterday my colleague Hugo ask me if i could do some over hours on Friday evening/night because we need to change or exchange version. Absolutely no problem because then I don’t need to return to our apartment. It’s a win, win, win situation.

I really love my working place here in the center of Dublin, it is quite amazing (big thanks to Magaret at this point). Some of my other colleagues from the OSZ told me that they only need to speak English when they get a new task or when there day start’s, but In my company I need to talk the whole day in fluent English and that helps a lot. Not only when I get a task, also when we talk over our countries or our football clubs or our governments and stuff like that.

Hugo told me why so many Spanish people are in Ireland or other countries: 57 % of the people who are under 25 years old, are jobless. And if you find a job in Spain, it is just a joke. He show me a job advert where over 1000 people fighting for. You need a university study, high level programming and graphic design skills (with certification), you need to speak perfect fluent English and one other language and than you get… 400 € per month and a contract for 6 months. I still can’t believe that.

The best day in the week was yesterday, Thursday. The champions league semi finals were done and both Spanish teams lose with a hard defeat against Dortmund and Munich. I couldn’t hide my smile while i came up the stairs to our office! 😀

This post are maybe a little bit off topic but in my opinion these intercultural things are the most interesting on this journey.

Cheers,

Alex

P.S.: If Stefan write me a message at 7:45am again, i need to kill him 🙂

New week, old things

Dear Reader,

it’s our third week here in Ireland and it becomes complete normal for me to speak in fluent English. Of course there are still a lot of small mistakes but I speak fluent with my colleagues and that’s the most important thing in my opinion. And I am really thankful for getting this work experience! I will definitely profit from this for the rest of my life.

Today we had a little team meeting and talk about the stuff we should do in the next few days. A few backup’s from our local developer machines and finish the mailmigartion to exchange 2010 (and than on 2013). After the mailmigration is done I need to find and configure a program that check the licenses of our windows PC’s in the network.  My biggest problem is the fact that we don’t have that much money so I need to try different freeware and trial solutions and all of them are as good as everything you got for free 😀

To bring this post to an end, let’s stay on the theme „for free“: the hot water heater in our sleeping room makes noises up to 80 dB. That’s like a lawn Mower, an accelerating car or a machine that blows the leaves from the street. But the highly insulating wooden door from our wardrobe safe us. If we close the door… we only have 75 dB 🙂
See you and have a nice day… and don’t worry, me and my colleagues are okay. We manage that stuff and as long as we can laugh together everything is fine 😉 The next post will be longer and with some photos again.

The dark side…

Dear Reader,

the weekend was as short as the weekend before. On Friday we were very tired, on Saturday we sleep until 3pm and at the evening we met our colleagues. Than we sleep again until 3pm on Sunday and the weekend is over.

I can’t show you any photos of that because it would ruin your view on our group and hopefully nobody is disappointed about that. But these evenings are a good way to hear something about the others and their working places.
Of course I read a lot Blogs and Blogpost’s but it’s way better to hear it directly and especially the story’s from Erik and Stefan are very funny every time. At this point: Greetings to them! Our apartment now not only sucks because it’s a ruin but also because we don’t clean it for a while. We will manage it today… maybe tomorrow 😀 *If we wait 2 weeks the food maybe will move itself to the garbage…* that’s an option but i think not a good one. No I’m just joking 😉 It’s a normal chaos for an apartment with 4 guys in it.

(of course we clean that on the same evening)
(of course we clean that on the same evening)

So that’s it for today. Please don’t take my Post to serious 😉

See you next time,

Alexander

Time is running

Dear Reader,

it feels like yesterday that I take my clothes, put it in my suitcase and start that adventure but now we are almost two weeks in Ireland. Everything is okay at the moment but I think in few weeks I will miss my family and friends.

The working place is still perfect for me and my english. I made first level support (where I need to talk with people :O), the exchange migration and other small things like reinstall computer’s, configure our new NAS or stuff like that. In our break’s we talk a lot about football and our team’s we support. Especially it’s a funny thing that there are a 2 German teams and 2 Spanish teams in the semifinals of the champions league. With all the Spanish guy’s here, hopefully Munich and Dortmund will win 😀

I'm working on the right hand side
I'm working on the right hand side

Before we start our journey, a lot of people told me that the Irish people are more relaxed and doesn’t work that much and stuff like that, but in my opinion they are working as hard as the German’s and they are more stressed. The only difference is this very courteous communication, no matter how stressed they are.

Not much happened in the last few day’s so we will read us later.

Yours sincerly,

Alexander

Bourgeois German’s!?

Dear Reader,

the first „working Monday“  was done a few days ago and it was really hard to stand up after that funny and short weekend. On Saturday we went to bed at 6am so we can’t sleep on Sunday. A devils circle 😀
But now the work starts to get interesting. I need to do the mail migration to Microsoft exchange in my company. A long and exciting process an i am really surprised because of the trust in me.

Nearly every day we need to go to the supermarket because we are very unorganized and sloppy but we will manage it in a few days, maybe weeks, hopefully not month. Of course that creates very funny situations like our daily conflict with the traffic light besides the street in front of our „hotel“. In general that’s complete different than in Germany. Sometimes we are standing besides a traffic light and feel like stupid bourgeois German tourists. Okay, we are bourgeois German tourist but we are not stupid, sometimes.

An other thing is the way you react on the sidewalk if someone is in front of you. He will step to his left side and you will step to your right side. Same problem as before :/ But hey, that was only one week. And like i know the Germans, at the end we are more irish than the Irish.

Our apartment still suck but we are all vaccinated so we will survive the 2 months. But when it comes true what Markus told me and another guy join us in the next few day’s, than we need to change again. Let’s hope that we don’t need to contact Magaret again 🙁

In the next Post I will tell you more about my work.

Best wishes from Ireland,

Alexander

The first week is over

Dear Reader,

the first week is almost over and everything is kind of normal. You stand up, you’re going to work, you’re coming back, eat something, relax, and going to bed.
On the weekend we made a little bit of sight seeing and going to the pub’s and bar’s with our colleagues.

It is a little bit of a shame that we need to work here in Ireland 😀 We will never see all of the beautiful places in this country
but we will try our best.

My workplace are just awesome. There are one big room for the IT guys with 11 places. 6 of the guys are Spanish, 2 of them are Irish and the 2 others are from Pakistan and Brazil. It is an international and funny atmosphere. Fortunately it is easy to speak fluent english.
Well, that’s it. Im done with this week. See you next week.

Your’s sincerly,

Alexander

The first Days

Dear Reader,

the first few days in Ireland are over and now we are really arrived. After an, more than less, complete renovation, our apartment sufficient for these 2 months.
I can proudly publish: We can shower now!

And now we enjoy our stay here in this beautiful city with all these peoples and different cultures. It’s a kind of save and pleasant feeling you will never have in Berlin.

After we visited Margaret on Monday, we were invited to visit the Guinness storehouse.

As you can see we enjoy our time here regardless from our accommodation.

See you later with some impressions from my workplace.

We arrived, alive!

Dear Reader,

after a hard flight besides my fellow Lars Holstein we landed in Dublin at 1pm. Our first informations and the long way to the hotel was arrange by a funny guy with an „OSXIMT“ sign at the airport. After we arrived on our hotel we were a little bit shocked. The apartment compete with a ruin and is way to small for 4 guys for 8 weeks. It’s really frustrating  espacially after the first informations from our colleagues about their apartments.

Positive is the position of our hotel. We were shopping in the supermarket and the diplomatistarea of dublin is 2 minutes away. We also see alot of nice churches and other awesome buildings.

Hopefully my next post can be more positiv but  a the moment these are the only things i can report of.  I am full of hope that Margaret or the hotel can manage our problem.

Best wishes from Ireland,

Alexander

Meine Erwartungen an Irland

Hallo lieber Leser,
