The work at IMEC

A dizzy day in Dublin today and I was not able to see any ship this morning and evening.

But therefor I repaired and flashed a lot devices. I replaced displays, bluetooth-adapter and flashed some of the devices I repaired the last days. I also flashed Cisco Wireless Access Points. Of cause I tested all units. All working fine, what else? Vincent also told me that I should work there because Jason an myself are a great team. After I was done with all my stuff Jason gave me a huge device to repair. I don’t know how many kilo it has but I guess around 15kg. He told me to replace the display. It wasn’t that easy but I managed to repair it in less than 45 minutes. And it works!

I’ll post a picture on weekend of that monster.

Greetings
Daniela

Nearly done

The project I described earlier, is nearly done. After installing ESXi, I set up 7 virtual machines. Two Windows Vista clients, one Windows 7 client, three Windows Server 2003R2 servers and one Windows Server 2008R2 server. I build a small domain, consisting of one domain controller, a small Windows Server 2003R2 cluster (two nodes), three clients for testing purpose and one 2008R2 server which shall run SQL Server 2005 and Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007R2. Unfortunately I had to interrupt my work, due to a missing DVD.

I heard, that I was scheduled to participate in a big project, which is very actual at Steria. My tasks would have been configuring many servers, configuring SAN controllers, configuring RAIDs and LUNs but unfortunately the customer now wants to use HP hardware instead of IBM hardware, so the project can not start yet and I hope, that it starts within my stay here at all.

Getting the third week started

Thanks to the bank holiday, this week starts today, Tuesday. I’m still overwhelmed by all the impressions I got this weekend. I just can highly recommend to visit Tobi’s blog and read his post about our weekend. He describes our coast trip, which I described earlier, with much blood, sweat and tears and I think it’s worth reading it. I’m still working on building a Windows environment with an ESXi Hypervisor, which was delayed due to Installation problems. The versions 3.5 and 4.1 did not cooperate with the hardware I have to use, so I was told to install Citrix XenServer. I spend a lot of time working with ESXi Hypervisor in Berlin so I’m very familiar with this product and its advantages. I missed many of them when I tried to set up VMs with XenServer. So I decided to spend more time on getting ESXi installed and I succeeded! Version 5.1 seems to be compatible and finally I  can handle the basic work.

A little project

During this week  I spend some time on configuring workstations for the NIPACS project, which was introduced in 2009. NIPACS means Northern Ireland Picture Archiving Communications System and enables hospitals to view digital medical patient data like MRTs on the computer and save it centrally in two data centers within Belfast. The advantage which comes with this technology is that medical patient data can be accessed by every hospital in Northern Ireland. The diagnostic workstations use very powerful hardware, meaning two Quad Core processors and 12 GB of RAM. Furthermore two high-definition displays of EIZO are used to view the medical pictures.

On Friday I got a little project. I have to set up a ESXi Hypervisor and configure a small Windows domain, including a Windows domain controller, a Microsoft SQL Server and some Windows Vista / Windows 7 clients. ESXi is already installed and the virtual machines have to be installed next week.

Friday

Yesterday was the last day at work. This day started not so good because I was tired from the last days. So I went to the busstation and was surprised how few people want to go to the university. At work Damian had the task for us to gather some information about outdoor Access Points. He want to establish a wireless connection for the medical devices at a field. He don’t know how big the field is, so it can be between a little court and a big soccer field. So we gave him the information and he left the work. Because Jannik and me had no other work to do we decided to go home. At the way back home we stopped for a little shopping tour. But it was a disaster. I found nothing to buy. But more on that later.
At the evening my roommates and myself went to the Botanic Inn, a popular pub for young people. After I entered the room a smell of piss crawled into my nose. But we decided to stay and hoped it would be better. It was actually better because the door at the smoker room opend very often and this „room“ was only a door outside. After two Budweiser for myself and one more or less for the other we went cheerfully back home.

Second week at work

Hi guys,

yes, the week is done, and I tell you today, what happened on my work.
On Tuesday have I got my new PC, now I can faster work . The true reason was, that I have stole a other employee his desk.
So, I have on Tuesday and Wednesday my PC set up. Now can I work with Linux (XUbuntu in detail), that is very good.

TGIF

I’m really looking forward to enjoying the weekend, so I think this picture best illustrates what I feel like. 😉

T.G.I. Friday's
Thank God it's Friday!

Yesterday I was given the task to document the MAC addresses of the devices that are connected to ten of Translink’s Cisco Catalyst 2950 access layer switches at Milewater Road. It took me about an hour with some e-mailing and surfing in between. Not a very interesting task, but at least some work on consoles of Cisco devices. 🙂

Now I’m keeping myself busy with documenting Mateusz’s business intelligence application again and waiting for the end of the work day at 2 o’clock …

The last days of this week…

It’s just few days ago, were i prepared my virtual machine on a HyperV-Server and wiki system for my developing of a new sharepoint website, now i worked with my own designed theme for this website and did some fine tuning of the stylesheets. On wednesday mornings, i and my supervisor visited the headquarter of Volunteer Now in the center of Belfast and i took some pictures of the office and some ones of the server room, where we did some support services. Well, you will see that this isn’t as structured as a profit oriented company, but it’s very amazing to see how this kind of non-profit organisation growth so large and has so many powerful infrastructure. Well, here are some pictures of this headquarter…

Cisco Heaven

Yesterday my work day started with a visit at Translink’s „data center“ at Belfast Central Station.

They have servers …

… networking equipment …

switches and cables
Some network equipment at Belfast Central Station

… and when it comes to structured cabling Translink strives for perfection! 😉

As you can see it’s rather a storeroom with a rack, some switches and an air conditioning system put in than a real data center.

I went there with my colleagues John and John, who both do most of the networking stuff at Translink. Why did we go there? The IS department just got a new redundant SAN system and plans are to move one part to Central Station to improve redundancy. To prepare this we met a network technician from Northgate (an IT service provider supporting Translink’s networking staff). He was introduced to Translink’s core network infrastructure with multiple sites connected via fibres and copper wires. After that he rushed through the core switch consoles, reviewed the configurations and presented some things that need to be changed in order to make the SAN replication work. We will get a full report soon.

The whole Translink data network is built on Cisco technology (as far as I know) so I hope there will be several opportunities to utilize my networking skills earned in the CCNA course in this (and coming) project(s).

While walking down the streets…

Everyday and every afternoon, i walking down the streets from my workplacement to my apartment, sometimes like monday, i saw some nice buildings in very nice sunshine, so i have took my smartphone and took some nice pictures along the streets…

Here is my first stag of my walk... Volunteer Now...

My next stag of my walk, it's looks like an university, but it's only an office complex... Carleton House...
On midway between my work and my apartment... Radisson BLU Hotel...
