hey ho

Hey guys,

since start of this week Zabbix 2.0.6 is running the newest version. This has solved my old problems but also brought new.

However until I reinstalled and reconfigured the Zabbix server it took a lot of time and nerves but someone has to do that.

Further I installed a Mail server on the Zabbix server a Postfix and a dovecot mail server. I want t0 use Posrfix at a SNMP server and dovecot as an POP3 server. I do this because I want to send notification mails when Zabbix discover s a problem. The Zabbix can’t work with Exchange server which is already in the network here, because you can’t configure mail settings like an auto identification and so on!

So I work with the dame long config files of the mail servers and try to find the right place and commandos.

At the moment I have a big fight with a cold so I must take things easier, drink a lot of hot tee and eat a lot of sore throat sweets. On Thursday I was sent back home then because my colleagues said I didn’t look  good. So I was at home on Friday. That’s sucks a little bit because until now I had to stay in the apartment. But still right now I don’t feel really better. This is also the reason why this blog entry comes that late.

Even a retrospective on the last weekend!(3-5.5)

So we did the same like last weekend Party (this time in another house) and there were people from the UK, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, Denmark and Hong Kong! And  on the other days we had a LAN Party and did the things you just do on weekends.

see you!

Middle of Week #5

Good morning everyone,

it is Saturday morning and I’m preparing and my stuff for the tour to Giant’s Causeway, that’s right I’m finally going! 😛 I’ll report my experiences, supported by pictures on Sunday evening, because this entry is for the last 2 1/2 days 😀

Lets start with Wednesday afternoon, well after I got off work I went shopping in the city centre and slightly underestimated the weight of the stuff I bought with result that it took my the double amount of time to get home than it took me to get there and a stiff neck next morning.

Thursday was, aside from the stiff neck, a pretty quit day. We got our delivery from Amazon including the new bench table I was telling you about in one of my last entries. So I had the pleasure of assembling the case and putting the hardware into/onto it and installing the operating system. But the operating system turned out is confused, because it detects 2 displays where is only one 😀 quit a mystery and I haven’t figured out yet what is causing this problem.

This brings me to Friday. Robin picked me up at 9 and we went to Armagh to visit the Armagh County Museum. Of course we didn’t went there for pleasure there was work to be done. This work included installing a new HDD and restoring the data from the old HDD onto it, replacing an old printer with the printer I prepared last week and last but not least to install the new DrayTek router and establish the VPN connection to Cultra Manor…oh and we had to install a wireless access point because they had no wireless access until now.
At the end of the day we accomplished all of our tasks except for installing the DrayTek. The Problem is that the current router is using an option to tunnel the public IP-Address of the firewall to the Internet, or something like this we are still figuring out what the company responsible for the firewall and internet setup  did. And because there is no visible option on the DrayTek to achieve a similar function we couldn’t install the router without everyone behind the firewall to lose their internet connectivity.
We left the current setup in place for now and starting on Monday I’ll try to find out how to get the DrayTek working or to implement a secure VPN connection between Cultra and Armagh with the micro server as a client, instead of a Site-to-Site VPN we would have an Server-Client setup.
I wanted to take some picture of Armagh as it is a beautiful town but the weather was terrible just like the last days we had rain most the day and I wasn’t able to take pictures without risking my camera. I just hope that the weather will be better for the tour today so that I can take pictures for me to share.

Have a nice weekend!

Yours sincerely,

Tobias

How it’s goin’ Guys?

In the last two days not much happened. I think we work too much and so we have no enough time to do what we would like to do.

Every evening I’m more exhausted as in Germany. The result of this is, that we don’t go to any pub or that we do other things.

Yesterday was a very sad day, because all Germans had a holiday / mens day.  All my friends sent me funny pictures from the bicycle tour and I had to work.
After work we had a healthy dinner and we relaxed and had a Guinness.

Unlikes other I think my food at least looks tasty….. or? (Well actually I believe it tastes better as well)

At work I have many problems with my project. Last week the project changed very often.

Any time I try something I get different problems which are very hard to fix.

Today I had an accomplishment. My project is almost done. I ‘ll not go to a disco or something, because tomorrow we have to start in the early morning. Our bus tour begins at 6:50 a.m.

Also I am relaxing now and I do nothing.

See you later

Plans

Heyho,

what shall I tell you, what do you want to hear from me? 😀

I think I show you a new friend of mine:

Cat!

Her name is just Cat and she always follows me. Of course she wants to be petted.^^

Really, she´s the star of this BnB! Even if my allergy is killing me after I touched her but okay. She is so incredible fluffy! 😀

Tomorrow I have a free day, that means I will do exactly NOTHING. Sleep long, eat, sleep, go to the toilet, eat and sleep again. Maybe I will learn a little bit about scripting with Powershell. I found out how incredible useful it can be if you have to administer several Users. One of my irish colleagues uses SVN for his work with Visual Studio, and he (that means me) has to backup the repository in case of a crash of the harddrive.

Some of you may chip in with „Why didn´t you use svnsync?“. Well, to use svnsync you have to setup two repositories. That means, you have to setup a second server or client or whatever. We don´t want to install this on our server, so we had to find another option.

I wrote a small batch-Script that saves his files to our Server. I know, it´s not much, but it´s nice to say „Hey, this is my script!“. Yes, I know too that Powershell and Batch are different things, but now I want to learn more about scripting and I think, that Powershell is the best and most useful thing to learn for an administrator.

I am sorry that there was no information on ireland today, but everyone here writes about his workplace (maybe they do not do enough interesting things here in ireland? 😉 )so I decided to do this too.

There will be some more information about Ireland on sunday. I will go to the cliffs of moher.

#15 – Street musicians, Parks and Howths

Hey,

As you may know (if not go and read previous blogs!) we had to spend the extended weekend differently that we previously intended. So instead of driving to the cliff of moher we spend the Sunday looking around Trinity College, the beautiful park I mentioned before, as well as the second visit in Howths, which I also mentioned before. I’d like to go into a bit more detail about this as I just mentioned it in one sentence, as I mentioned before. (HA try to get that paragraph by reading it only once!)

So first I headed to the shopping street right behind the Trinity College just to see if I could find anything tempting. On this way (and later on as well) I noticed the street musicians. They are extremely talented (German street musicians suck compared to these. Yes I did not write „are bad“ because that expression would be too weak). Just to get you definetly confused about what happened at which time, on our way home Erik and I stood by a few musicians and listened to them. I even considered to purchase one of their CDs.

After my not so great „shopping tour“, where I did not afford anything, I met again with the Trinity College group just there. Its a lovely place and I would like to study there. I would spend a lot of time on the campus rather than at home I guess.

On Monday we had our second visit to Howths, this time a bit earlier. While we waited for the „Nick-group“ to arrive we enjoied the low tide and walked a bit on the sand. Erik was complaining about getting wet feet all the time. (HAHA, go buy decent shoes!) As Nick, Felix and Mike arrived we got lunch nearby and headed to the quite highest place reachable.

It was a decent weekend and I feel that I used my time splendidly.

Next entrys will be about the cliffs and the Celtic tour i guess. Until then!

Still quiet…

Hi folks, it’s me again.

Nothing really new to tell about my time here in Ireland.

At work we are still making tests with the parking machine and are fine-tuning our webpage.

On Tuesday I was visiting a physiotherapist for a massage to get the tension out of my back. Also I hoped that the numbness of my fingers would go away. It didn’t but it got better.

Yesterday I tried to cook something and, for those who now my cooking skills, it was a success.

It tasted awesome and I am kind of proud of it and myself.

I think that’s all for today.

See you soon.

Markus

What the…

Dear reader,

today nobody need to work in Germany. Strange that the foreigners in Germany have the free days from their country for free as well but I think the „Irish way“ is better in this case (maybe the first time). So I need to work, today the first time without Hugo on my side but I have enough tasks to do.

Another funny thing I don’t realize since yesterday is the fact that you’re getting more comfortable and better while you are speaking fluent English. I understand the hardest accent and can answer, without any problems to find the right words or something like that. And that’s one reason why I need to say: It’s funnier and better at work than in our apartment. I try to stay as long as possible at work and everybody who knows me must be surprised about that fact.

What I miss the most in Ireland is (of course) my family, my PC, my 100k internet connection, my TV, my bed, MY OWN ROOM and my friends :'( But it should be okay for the last 3 weeks.

By the way, it’s so funny to see how we need to spam the sh.. out of this blog to hold our „3 per week“ arrangement 😀

Cheers,
Alex

#14 – Smithing plans

Hihi,

As a few of us already wrote, we planned to go to the Cliffs of Moher on the extended weekend and that we were not able to go there. Reason for that is, that we would not get a rental car by any chance, as our drivers are too young. (The websites told us something different). So there we were, on Saturday morning, at the airport with no car and a booked hotel which we could not reach. The car rental service was so nice to let us go free of charge, but the papers of the hotel booking said something else (119€ per room, and we had 3 rooms).

Of course we had to cancel anyway so everyone pushed me forward again „go Stefan, your English is best…“. I always end up on the front line if its something important… Well at least I was able to cancel the booking free of charge, as I explained that we were from Germany and got faulty information from the internet and that we had no chance to get by at all.

We went home and made different plans. We went to some shopping centers and later to trinity college. Also we went to a most beautiful park (which name I forgot). We will go there again some other day. On Monday we had our second visit in Howth.

Also Nicks group found a one day bus tour to the cliffs so we will go for that next weekend.

Will tell you about, i’m excited to go there!

Cheers!

Week 5

Hi guys

I hope you are well.

Everything is fine here in Dublin. At Monday we were in Howth again, because this day was a bank holiday. At morning we were shopping in Lidl for food. After this shopping tour we met our colleagues in Howth. As Nick, Mike and Felix arrived in Howth later, so we walked along the beach. After the other guys arrived, we searched for a place to get lunch.  But all restaurants at the coast were too expensive, so we bought us a snack in a little shop. The people in this shop were very crazy. They took at least five orders at once. It was a big confusion.   After a good lunch we climbed the cliffs and had a nice view on the ocean. In the evening we cooked and relaxed the remaining time.

Hammer Aussicht oder?
Hammer Aussicht oder?

Yesterday was a normal workday. I created a web API and learned many new things. After work I cooked fish, vegetables and rice and we relaxed the remaining evening and watched Breaking Bad. For the weekend we planned a bus tour to the Cliffs of Moher and a Celtic Tour to 7 different places.

See you later

Some complaining

Hey,

in the last few days nothing really interesting happened. I still like it here (even if I look forward to the 31.5.), I help where I can and yeah…

We are still screwed in terms of WIFI in our accommodation. I found out what the problem is but the owner believes only a guy from the „Government“ who lives here too. Works for the government and lives in a BnB… Should tell everything.

We got a new router here and everything is still not working. I told them, it´s the fault from the powerline here. No one was reacting. Okay. I don´t care. I stopped to complain about. Other people could do this here. I am sure this will give a good rating for this accommodation. 🙂

I like it when the guy is telling things about networks. It´s funny everytime, because I have to correct him by every statement. As long there is WIFI in the big Living-Room, it´s okay.

The only thing which annoys is, that the female owner here thinks we germans are all evil and are responsible for the not working WIFI. If she talks face to face with us she is incredible friendly but I heard her telling lies about us.

Nothing to complain about: I still like my workplace! I really like the people there and what is the most important: My english seems to improve!

I begin to understand them way better than before. I am able to have larger conversations, with bigger sentences and some more smalltalk.

I still have some problems when they talk to each other, but it becomes better and better. I do not only learn a lot about english at my workplace, but also a lot of technical things. I think, I really fit in this team there. 🙂

See you guys!
