SMS to SCCM 2007 Migration

Finally, last week the new server arrived and I could start my work. I will work together with my co-worker Owen (a United supporter 🙂 ). We installed Windows Server 2008 (64b-bit) and SCCM 2007 on the HP – Server.(Intel Xeon – 8 processors, 12 Gb memory)

On Tuesday and Wednesday a Microsoft – Expert visited and helped us with the installation and migration from the old system (SMS). He was an italian therefore I had no problem to understand him. Because he spokes really slow and „basic“.

He showed us what we had to install to use SCCM 2007 (ASP, SQL-Server etc.) and the first moves with SCCM 2007. Furthermore, we could start to migrate from the old system to the new one. All clients (about 900) from the different locations of Translink must be assigned to the new site server (called CMS).

To accomplish this, we had to move the different boundaries (about 80 subnets) from SMS to SCCM. The german word „Fleißarbeit“ hits the nail on the head to describe this task. After it, the SCCM – Server knew all clients and we were able to perform the client installation (to manage the clients via SCCM 2007). We decided to perfom the installation piecemeal, because we don’t want to overcharge the network.

The clients installation takes a lot of time, but we migrated 500 computers so far. Hopefully we can complete this task today, because tomorrow the italian – expert will visit us again.

The First Day
Montag, Mai 10th, 2010

Our arriving was good and without any problems.
We drive at first in our apartments and then we were in the SWAN – Institute, where we got our bus-tickets and details for our companies and so on.
After that we purchase foods.

But than …
We go back to the apartments and there was the floor under water.
Now, stands a dehydrator in the floor. This will be dry in two days, hopefully.

Hey!

The Apartments are shit.

The washbasin is a pure misconstruction, therefore the flooded floor.

The shower is very dirty. We want this disinfect for now.
Than, the heating in the living room don’t work.

We have too few cabinets in the room. I currently share a half cabinet with Alex. The other side is occupied by waterlines.

The washing machines are in the seventh floor and there are three mashines. One of these are damaged and the room and so on is very dirty.
All things looks very used.

So, I think that was it.

Hi at all!

Until now I have worked four days. And these days were very nice!

I work at the company, who is called “Computer Doctor”. They support users, repair notebooks and desktops from the user.
My work time is pretty fine, from 8 or 9am (flexible) to 2pm. But then Peter (my chef) give me more work home with.
I work with one another from the class together, is called Tino. And we have two projects:
The first project is create a database, because they are still working with notes. And then we create forms which going to integrated in Access. At the moment we work with a touchscreen pc to prepare for the Database and forms.

Sometimes comes Brain (this is the Boss of the company) into the room and screams: “Germans, bloody germans. I hate Germans”, or something.

It’s really funny most of the time.

So, that was it at first.

bye

… gone

I have no clue how it could happen, but all my messages are gone. 🙁 Except the last one.

I want to try reproduce the entries, or I just write a longer one. I don’t know…
And now I save my enties. 😉

See you then.

work and spare time

Hi @ all,

the first piece of good news is, that we finished our CISCO project (bgp over mpls) last week.

There was a nasty snag that we solved after taking a tip from a co-worker, but now the network is running and the people here were impressed. Now we are positioned in the service desk of the northern irish goverment, although we don’t answer calls or anything, the reason is that we’re now close to our co-workers and we have to speak more english than before. Sometimes we have the chance to go with a colleague to some outposts to fix some problems (to replace a switch etc.)

The next piece of good news is, that I saw the Giants Causeway. Steffen, Friedrich and me took a bus tour to a few of the sights where we saw the hexagonal stones of the Giants Causeway. That was really impressive and the landscape was so beautiful. We saw an old castle and a distillery (Bushmills – the oldest distillery around the world) too. We also crossed a small suspension bridge to a small island (which name i have forgotten =/) . The water around the island was dreamlike, it was as clear as crystal and reminded me of the caribbean.

We were lucky on the day, because the sun was shinning all the time. (We were away for approximately 12 hours). In the evening we were exhausted but Friedrich and Steffen couldn’t get enough and went into a pub to let the day fade away.

Later!

There’s no news

Hi folks!
The weekend passed, like the last weekends. On Friday we went to a club („twenty one“) with some peers of the other apartments,
we drank several alcoholic drinks and enjoyed the music. On Saturday we made our own „pub-crawl“ with our best friends „Guinness“ and „Bulmers“,
incidently we followed the Eurovision Song Contest 2010 at TV. But the weather wasn’t on our side this weekend and I got soaked to the skin, but on Monday when we were also at a club, I took along my German umbrella. Only the umbrella was after a few minutes completely soppy.
Later more about the rainy days in Dublin.

Greetz to Germany!

Arbeit! Arbeit!

Moin everyone,

because lee alread told you about our Weekend )hopefully, I didn´t read his Blog so far) I don´t have much things to tell you. Work is the same, this friday I´m going to present the template for Joomla wich I have created in the past few days. Hope John (my Boss) likes it. Anyway I´m looking forward to the next Weekend, I promised myself not to spend mony on anything else than food in this week so I can save some money wich is rare enough for us here in Dublin.

My next Blog will come on Monday evening because we have a long Weekend this time here in Irland and we don´t have to work on monday.

c u soon,

Tim

Hi to anybody who’s interested in my new highly motivated blog entry.
So what could I tell you? It’s pretty much the same tiring private stuff as Marco told before. Every day is fairly like the others: getting up, go to work, cook(/clean), skype and sleep. My workplace continues beeing monotonous, I’m pretty much like a computerstore technician. Right now, I’m waiting for the IIS and SQLServer installation to prepare my holidays (subsequently to my return to Germany).

As you may know, Mr. Bavar will come around (Belfast) at friday to visit our companys and appartements. I’m waiting eagerly just because it will give me some variety. Sounds insane, hm?

The only meaningfull message I could tell you is, Oliver left our house at sunday afternoon because of grievances. A really enviable chance for him, enjoy!

Cheers,                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     byebye, bye…bye!

A Dublin Night

Hello to all!
I think we now had the first days, where the weather was not so good.
But we have made the best of it …
David and Sebastian from Belfast visited us on Saturday, also Marco and Alex, from Herberton apartment were there. We drank a lot of beer in our apartment; we knew how expensive is the evening. see David’s and Lee’s entry.
Then we went to a pub which is called by all: “Le Cirk”, go there and drank a beer and have moved on.

Then we landed in the Tempelbar Street, where we found a club with live music and we have gone into it. The name of this club I do not remember. There we saw also Lena’s win at Euro Vision Song Contest. It was there on television. Then, when David and Sebastian have spent enough money, we have brought them to the bus station.

But for us was the evening of course not over yet! We went to a pub, where we picked up two other friends of Lee. With which we went into the “Porter House”. A very nice club, which brews their own beer!
But unfortunately the club closed about 3am and we went home.

See you next time!
bye

Hello to everyone,

Sorry that I did not write a blog entry for more than a week. It is because nothing happened. I wake up, go to work, go to the apartment and then talking to my girlfriend, so yes, I am a very boring person for most of the people here. HAHAHA

The day before yesterday the dryer in our apartment got broken, so I will buy a clothes dryer during my lunch hour.

Fortunately, my girlfriend com here for two weeks on Sunday, so I think from this date I get started to have a look at Dublin and Ireland in general. We already booked a room for one night near the Cliffs of Moher, so we are hoping to see a beautiful sunset there.

The Africa Centre has many activities to inform people from Africa and people in general about many different things.

Yesterday they had their annual lecture and talked about how sport, e.g. football, can help to improve the development for people. They showed a movie of the Women Fighters FC, a women football club from Zanzibar, which is about how football changed the life of these women in a positive way.

I started to work with their new e-mail system from Rackspace. It is a little bit difficult to get the Company Directory, similar to the global address book at exchange, working. So I am in contact with their provider Host Ireland and we are trying to solve it. As of the day the Company Directory is working fine I have to upload all their e-mails to the new e-mail accounts, because they currently store all their e-mails locally on their PC’s, so they cannot access them from outside the office or on a different PC.

I think this will take a lot of time, because the Africa Centre only have ADSL with an upstream of 1Mbps and I think I have to upload more than 4 GB e-mails.

If there is nothing to do for me at work I continue my self-study about CCNA VOICE, which I want to pass after our internship. It is a really difficult topic, because you have to start from the beginning, my CCNA does not really help me to learn the VOICE stuff. So it will be drudgery to pass it.

Finally, my girlfriend arrived here on Sunday. She will stay here for two weeks, so I feel a lot better nowJ

I know that this blog is a little bit confusing, that is because I wrote him on many different days.

Take care! Bye!

Autobahn and über-wealthy

This blog was supposed to be online yesterday but our internet connection was down a couple of hours. That’s why I am late again.

Third Week

So today is our relaxed Day, we decided to stay at home in the evening so got some time to write another blog.
This Tuesday we went to a pub/club called “Diceys Garden” a second time. There are two dance floors. One is outside in the “Garden” and another inside. Every Tuesday a band is playing on the floor inside, unfortunately the same band every week and the same songs, too. That’s why I probably will not go there again but I really recommend going there at least one time.

On Wednesday we just played a round of billiard which is really expensive I think. By now we found two billiard saloons here in Dublin. At the cheaper one you pay 1€ for 6 minutes to play. That’s why we just play for half an hour.
On Thursday evening Tim and I have been to “Le Cirk” with some Brazilian people I told you about. I got the picture from the Brazilian BBQ now. Here it is.

At the pub some Bands were playing Live Music. They seemed to be very young but still they played very good.
Friday evening after being on a party we went to a pub with a bunch of young people we meet on the street. After leaving the pub we had to walk home in the rain. Thats only the second time since we arrived here in Dublin that I got wet from the rain. I hope at Berlin there is nice weather too?
Saturday afternoon we went to a game of football. David and Sebastian were visiting us that day. I won’t talk about the game much because I think Sebastian is the right man for doing that. David however mentioned the tiny entrance to the Stadium in his blog and here is a picture I took. I even had to go sideways to get through.

In the evening we went to the pub “Le Cirk” again, but this time it was quite boring. We went there to early the pub was quite empty. So we decided to go to Buskers a pub/club because some musicians where playing live music. Sadly they stopped five minutes after we entered the pub. Still we had a great time. Sometime after midnight David and Sebastian left to get back to Belfast. Afterwards we went to one of the two Porterhouses in Dublin. Actually it is a pub but like most pubs there is a dance floor and most of the people were dancing. At the Porterhouse they sell a beer called “Porterhouse Red” which is brewed by the Porterhouse itself. It’s similar to Guinness and Smithwicks and for my taste somewhere between, it’s a pretty good one. We meet some Spanish/Portuguese/Brazilian friends at the pub and had a good time until the Pub closed sometime around 3am.
There is another picture from the one time Tim and I went to the beach I wanted to share with you. When you see it you wouldn’t believe that I took this picture in Ireland rather than Spain or another Mediterranean country. That’s what it felt like to be on the beach.

Today we went to the Soul festival picnic at a park near our apartment. There were basically some live bands playing. I took some videos and want to share the Band called “The Barley Mob” with you.

Learning French, teaching German
Well I am hanging around a lot of French, Italian and Spanish people. Most of them at least know some German words. For example I want to ride the autobahn sometime, a Japanese guy told me. Of course you have to teach the German word for cheers… Prost not Bost, which by the way is: Kampai in Japanese. So besides learning some Japanese I improve my French too. By the time I am able to have a simple conversation in French, while at first I had difficulties to think of a lot of French words.

I read through the newspaper some morning last week and stumble across the word creation über-wealthy in the newspaper. It was an article about some rich people. Thought that was quiet funny.

Money
As David mention in his blog Dublin is really expensive.
For a pint of beer you got to pay 4€ if you find a cheap pub. Often you will pay 4.50€ to 5.50€ for one pint. (Diceys 2€ for one pint each Tue – 5€ entrance)
We buy all our food at Tesco, the cheapest supermarket but sill expensive. By now we actually just ate at home to save some money. A Cheeseburger is about 1.70€ at Mc D and BK.
Cloths however are quite cheap especially at Pennys where I got a sweatshirt for about 15€ and some shirts for 11€ each.
A one way ticket for the bus is about 1.15€ to get to the city center. If you want to go further you have to buy up to 2.20€. Gladly I got a monthly ticket from our funding.
In the end it is quite expensive to go out in the evening and as David said, but the best opportunity to speak English is when you go out somewhere. At work I don’t get the chance to speak English very often because everyone is just working including me. Still I used my time and money here very well by now.

Later,
Lionel
