Today we were at Crumlin Road Gaol. It’s a jail near the city center. It was built in 1846 and closed in 1996.
The jail is built like a star. There is an administrative building where the jail wings are attached in a circle. This results in a large central room from which you can see all the cell wings. We booked a standard tour through the jail which cost 9 pounds. The tour lasted about 80 minutes. Unfortunately I was a little disappointed, because I had imagined it more exciting. I would have liked to know more about the everyday life of the inmates. Highlights were one of the cell wings and the execution room. The tour guide was also very funny. All in all the jail was worth seeing, but the tour could have been cheaper.
